Calypso is a form of syncopated Afro-Caribbean music or song popular in Caribbean countries and wherever people from the Caribbean live. It was developed during colonial times, largely as a means of communication among African slaves in the French and British islands of the Caribbean. MENTO
Mento is a form of Jamaican folk music popular in the 1950s, foreshadowing ska and reggae. Somewhat similar to calypso, its lyrics were generally pleasant and light-hearted, and the featured instruments were guitar, banjo and drums.

PHILADELPHIA
The Mayor's Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs was signed into an Executive Order officially inacting the Commission in 2005, by the then Mayor Strreet. Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell created and actively serves as an integral part of the Commission in support of nearly 30,000 Immigrants living and working in her West Philadelphia 3rd District. Councilwoman Blackwell has since stepped up and supported and introduced resolutions to call attention to Female Genital Mutilation; Support Darfur Alert Coalition; The Liberian Temporary Protective Status (TPS) and the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) and supported Philadelphia Haitian Relief Effort to victims of Haiti's January 2010 devastated earthquake. She has partnered with international organizations on behalf of the Commision and has signed agreements to promote MOU's internationally.
